Tiberius Gladio

Tiberius Gladio 999 silver plated bronze and 24k gold plated bronze hand-burnished

Material: bronze

Origin: Gladius of the Mainz type, the upper decorative plate on the scabbard shows the emperor Tiberius (hence the name attributed to Gladio – that is “of Tiberius”) who symbolically presents his Germanic victories to Augustus, Augustus half-naked and seated in the pose of Jupiter, next to him the Goddess Victoria and Mars Ultor (Avenger), while Tiberius, in military estate, shows the statue of  Victoria. Another hypothesis wants that Tiberius is sitting in the position of Jupiter, to him Germanicus presents his victories. Another decorative plate shows the legionary Eagle with open wings inside the pod. Found in the Rhine near Mainz (Germany), now in the British Museum. The blade is in tempered K720 steel while the handle is in hand carved walnut and bone. The metal parts of the scabbard were made of 24k gold plated bronze and 999 silver plated bronze (smooth central band).
